Mjällby AIF were comprehensively beaten at home by Gais. Nikola Vasic, 34, sank the hosts with two goals in five minutes during the second half, scoring his first goals for his new club.

Andreas Brännström's first defeat since returning to the club was a heavy victory for the visitors. Joackim Fagerjord opened the scoring as early as the 13th minute after a failed clearance by Mjällby goalkeeper Robin Wallinder. After the break, Vasic took over and secured Gais's first goal in five matches. Gais had previously gone four matches in a row without scoring.

A serious situation

The loss means Mjällby now sit 12th in Allsvenskan with 22 points from 21 games. The team is three points above Degerfors IF, who hold the relegation playoff spot, and their next match is at home against Degerfors on October 10th. It is a direct six-pointer in the fight against the drop.

The last win came over a year ago, on August 15th last year against Sirius. Since then, it has been a long string of disappointments. In the six consecutive defeats, Mjällby have scored three goals and conceded fifteen. The team's top scorer Jacob Bergström, with nine goals this season, was quiet in attack against Gais. Bergström has not scored in the last seven matches.

For Gais, Vasic's performance was a relief. - An incredible joy. It really felt like it was going to come today, says Vasic. He joined the club this summer from Hammarby after winning the Superettan top scorer award in 2024 with 17 goals for BP. - I have felt a pressure, but it's a positive pressure. I want to deliver, and now two goals came, he says.

For Mjällby, a huge task remains. Brännström and his players now have just over two weeks to turn the tide before the key meeting with Degerfors. The team's current standings and upcoming fixtures show the scale of the challenge. Coach Andreas Brännström states that the team is in a difficult period. - We are in a really tough period right now. We have to find our way back to what made us successful, he says.
