Mjällby AIF received a harsh reality check as GAIS came to Strandvallen and thrashed them 3-0. It was a heavy defeat that ended the small upturn in form the team had experienced under new head coach Andreas Brännström.
GAIS opened the scoring as early as the 13th minute through Joackim Fagerjord, who elegantly chipped the ball over Mjällby goalkeeper Robin Wallinder. TV4 Play commentator Patrik Westberg exclaimed, "Oj vilket vackert mål!" Fagerjord himself was pleased with the finish. "Där satt den gött," he said afterwards.
GAIS dominated the second half
After the break, the visitors took complete control. Nikola Vasic made it 2-0 in the 54th minute after Nikola Petrovic dummied the ball to set him up. Just five minutes later, Vasic was there again to slot home the third and decisive goal. Mjällby, who had managed two draws following Brännström's appointment, had no answer to GAIS's attacking play.
The loss means Mjällby AIF remain in a precarious 12th place in the Allsvenskan with 22 points from 21 games. The team's goal difference is now minus eight, with 27 scored and 35 conceded. Recent form is concerning with three losses and two draws in the last five matches.
The next fixture is a direct confrontation with relegation rivals Degerfors IF at home on October 10th. Degerfors sit in the playoff spot, three points behind Mjällby, making the match a genuine six-pointer. To turn the tide, the team needs to rediscover the defensive solidity that was missing against GAIS.
Jacob Bergström, the team's top scorer with nine goals so far this season, was quiet against GAIS. His form will be key to create the goal-scoring chances needed to pick up points in the upcoming, decisive matches.
