A striker making waves in the Champions League still cycles to matches and used to work at Subway
Swedish veteran striker Jacob Bergstrom has gone from working in Subway to scoring in the Champions League in eight years. Bergstrom, 31, played a crucial role as Mjallby won their first-ever Swedish top-flight title last year. In May this year, he scored in the Swedish cup final, helping his club lift the trophy for the first time in their 87-year history. This period of unprecedented success has also translated into a European run, with the club now looking to qualify for the Champions League proper through the tournament’s gruelling qualifying rounds. Once again, the target man played a pivotal part in the second qualifying round, finding the net in the 3-0 first leg victory over Lincoln Red Imps of Gibraltar. A 3-0 win on aggregate over two legs will now see Mjallby take on Slovan Bratislava, managed by former Barcelona and Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure, in Tuesday afternoon’s third round qualifying clash. For all of his recent glory, Bergstrom had to wait a considerable amount of time to reach such heights in his football career. He was never picked up by a youth academy and was still playing amateur football aged 22.
