Mjällby AIF secured a vital point in the Allsvenskan on Saturday with a 1-1 draw away to AIK. The match marked Andreas Brännström's return to Strawberry Arena, this time as head coach of the visiting side.
Jacob Bergström put Mjällby ahead in the 19th minute following an assist from Áki Samuelsen. AIK's Axel Kouame equalised in the 40th minute, ensuring a share of the points. AIK goalkeeper Robin Wallinder had a quiet afternoon. "There wasn't much to do today. You weren't exactly idle," he said afterwards.
The point is key for Mjällby in their battle to avoid relegation. The team now sits 12th in the table with 21 points from 20 games, three points clear of the drop zone. Jacob Bergström, who scored his eighth goal of the season, is the team's top scorer. The team's recent form includes three consecutive losses preceding the two draws now.
Andreas Brännström, who previously managed AIK, was pleased with his new team's effort. "It was a difficult match today," he said. "We had big problems when we won the ball today, AIK could eat us up a bit today. But we fight and help each other."
Mjällby are currently without Timo Stavitski and Villum Dalsgaard due to injury.
